Matt and Tony’s restaurant is an elevated neighborhood diner concept in the Del Ray area of Alexandria. It will feature all-day brunch and specialty pastries including recipes from Anton Schabas, an Austrian immigrant and the great-grandfather of the owner. The project task from an architectural standpoint was to transform the space and give it a new identity without making extensive structural modifications. There are many custom elements in the design such as: a huge custom front door, custom seating, customized light fixtures, and a custom steel liquor storage rack suspended from the ceiling. New finishes throughout the space were selected to have a rich textural quality and to reinforce the ambiance. The color palate of the materials used is somewhat restrained with subtle shades of blue and gray to highlight the decorative light fixtures and live plants that will be throughout the space. Another draw of the restaurant will be the outdoor patio seating. By intelligently reconfiguring the site, the patio seating was able to be doubled while maintaining the required off-street parking.
The success of Matt and Tony’s can be attributed to close collaboration and communication from the owners, contractor, interior designer, architect and engineers and others that helped carry a high level of detail and customization throughout the project and execute it in an accelerated timeline
